Some how, some way, Myst translates into an *excellent* VR game almost flawlessly. This game holds the name "Myst", it looks like Myst, and it has the same goal and objectives as Myst, but it is resoundingly not Myst. In the case of this iteration of Myst, I must say the answer is a resounding "No". There's a famous thought experiment, The Ship of Theseus, that asks the question: if every part of the ship has been replaced, is the restored ship the same as the original. Hell, the "celebratory" lighting upon arriving at the end of the maze is just.gone didn't realize I had completed the maze except for the fact that the mazerunner had a close-up of the wall and I couldn't reverse out anymore. This maze might as well have been built that very day.
Gone is the feeling that this was something old, but functional. Gone is the roller coaster with near-misses to shifted topology that replaced it in realMyst. The maze itself has been cleaned up: gone is the feeling questionable stability from the original. But as a vehicle, the Mazerunner did not need to be neutered in this fashion.
I can understand why the Library Tower elevator and the Fireplace no longer rotate in the name of VR orientation and motion-sickness. The Stoneship Age book no longer morphing from the table.Īnd this is the most disappointing implementation of the Mazerunner. The Selenetic Age book viewer being replaced with a simple trap door. I'm talking about seemingly minor things that gave the world some unique personality. I'm not talking about the missing Rime age that always seemed to be a tacky add-on that added nothing to the game.

I will always recommend this game.īut I don't know what to say about this version of the game other than that some aspects of this game's personality have been lost in the name of modernization.
